Red States and Red Shirts
I am wearing a red shirt today... NOT intentionally! One of my seniors pointed it out thinking I did it deliberately. I didn't, but that was very astute of him and quite funny too!

Sad and Bitter Educators
Many of the staff members are roaming around today with dejected looks on their faces. I, as you could probably guess by my last post, am walking around with a hard look of realism on my face: there is still Falujah with which to deal (and all of our other problems).
However, the bitterness (which I guess would have been intimidation if it had happened yesterday) extends to one of the break rooms for the faculty where someone put two toilet seat covers on the table with the words "Bush" and "Yea" written in black ink. On top of them is a piece of paper with the words: "Bush Victory Hats. Use properly and wear with pride."
Oh, they are just sooooooo tolerant!

Morning Ruminations
George Bush has won. But all the giddiness has me wondering... How can so many Republicans be so elated when we only won by 3%?
Yes I realize that translates into a few million votes. But let's face it, the Democrats nominated a dog, and he still got 48% of the vote.
The early numbers on the Senate are encouraging with Republicans poised for a four seat pick up and NO MORE Tom Daschle. Maybe Senator Kerry will bother to show up for work now.
Even more encourageing, as George Stephanopolous just mentioned on Good Morning America, is that the number one issue cited in the exit polls was "values." Now, was that the number one issue for the Democrats who voted for Kerry as well? If so, what are their values? What about the last-minute undecided voters who finally decided? Is this an indication that the evangelicals realized that they have a moral responsibility to vote this time around (four million stayed home four years ago).
It is too early to be as giddy as some are. The answers are not in. It is like the fan who is excited that his team has won the game, but does not realize that many players were injured. How serious are the injuries? If they can be shaken of by the next game, then we can be giddy.
Of course it is hard to be giddy when one is Catholic living in a state with a Republican governor who has a moral compass as bent out of shape as Senator Kerry's. Arnold may find that he has about as much of a chance of winning as Kerry as the Catholics and evangelicals might just stay home should he run for president in four years (assuming a change in the Constitution that I am adamantly against). That should be enough to force Republicans to look elsewhere for a replacement to W (like Gov. Jeb Bush; and I know what Jeb has said about running for president).
Proposition 71, the stem-cell research FUNDING issue passed with almost 60% of the vote. Where does the magic money come from people? Our less than stellar recent bond performance tells me that this one will cost more than the estimated $6 billion dollars.
The Sydney Morning Herald is still getting wrong when they are trying to get it right about the impact of blogs on this election. I think they realize that they are part of MSM even though they are a foreign paper. They can rage into the night all they like, but they had better adapt before they become as irrelevant as Dan Rather. Okay, I'm a little giddy about this one!
I have now seen two Christmas commercials in the span of fifteen minutes. It appears the next campaign has already commenced.

Diane Sawyer, speaking with the Senator-elect Obama of Illinois, in reference to the values issues, asked if this country was religiously divided. What can this possibly mean? Does she think that there is a divide between two religious camps who have different core morals? Or was this yet another MSM swipe at religious people. Like Dennis Prager is fond of saying, there is no bigger biggot than a liberal attacking a person of faith.
Of course there is another bit of news that makes me a bit giddy, and that is that since the Senate has gone to 55 Republicans (probably), the future bodes well for the Supreme Court. And keep Cheif Justice Rehnquist in your prayers.

Failing the Global Monitor Test
Kerry will probably use the views of these global yahoos quoted in the International Herald Tribune to appeal the results in Florida if he loses. However, I did like the one decent Republican-American quote at the end which translated (go read it) means "our elections do not need to meet your GLOBAL TEST!"
Abortion and Politics
Early rumors put Bush easily winning the traditionally Catholic vote. One of the issue is abortion, and as a political questions (as well as a moral one) it is becoming a hot topic in our allied country of Australia.

Silly Foreign MSM
The silly Sydney Morning Herald has proven once again to be a liberal rag (liberal in the political sense, and not the the Liberal Party of Australia). All through the recent elections in Australia, the SMH was swooning in ecstasy about the Latham campaign. They were very very wrong.
Now they chose to latch on to this idea that the bloggers in the U.S. are somehow tilting things for Kerry. I seriously doubt that a Kerry win will be attributed to lefty bloggers here, but it is interesting to note that the SMH has run an article that at least focuses on blogging even though it has, once again, picked the wrong side of political spectrum. Any serious reader of the net realize that it has been the right-side of the blogosphere making inroads, the most recent being being DaschleVThune
Panic boy, Matt Drudge, may have done himself a lot of short-term damage with his hysterical posts about early exit returns. The sample used was heavily skewed towards Kerry to begin with with over 59% of those polled being women.
As for the better side of blogs, Lileks has threatened to hide with a bottle of scotch tonight and ignore the results. I found it personally amusing that he would refer to the Scarlett Pimpernel as my copy of it was returned my another teacher today. Sink me, if his timing wasn't appropriate!
As for me, when the polls close at 8:00 p.m. tonight, I will remove my lawnsigns and remove my bumper stickers. Life goes on folks. We are all Americans first... at least I will try to abide by that idea until Kerrry appoints his first lefty to a cabinet post! (smirk!)

Overnight, one of Kerry's open-minded supporters went down our street and destroyed yard signs supporting Republican candidates and positions. Democrat signs were left untouched.
I reinstalled the Scolinos for Congress sign of my 60+ old widow neighbor whose son spent much of the early part of Gulf War II as medical doctor/officer in the Gulf. My Scolinos sign was untouched, but the petty night stalker went after my "Catholics against Kerry" sign. Perhaps my three little signs suffered the least amount of damage (only one was touched) since one of my other signs boasts "I am the NRA and I vote." You never know who might be lurking in the Bushes (pun intended).

Jimmy Carter has just returned from that bastion of democracy, Mexico (where all the elections ever held have been open and free), just in time to supervise, analyze and whine about our terrible election that begins today. If you must, NPR has an audio interview of the ex-President ponticating about the Constitution and other matters political.

Will the REAL Puppet Masters Please Stand Up!
Al Jeezera keeps releasing bits and pieces of translation from the tape of Osama "i'm not dead yet; I think I will go for a walk" bin-Laden. The latest spurt appears that OBL has been listening and watching not only Michael Moore's 9/11 propaganda pieces but to Bruce Springsteen as well. Why? OBL is now rambling on about his own "Glory Days" when the Soviets were the enemy who were bled dry economically. Of course, that assumes that Soviet communism was an otherwise vibrant and growing economy, and the Cold War made no significant impact on the Soviet Union's ultimate demise or preceived need to get out of Afghanistan. Face it OBL, it is time you moved to Paris and shared a room with Arafat.
Or maybe OBL, can replace the puppet in this children's show in New Zealand.

I'll stick with a Bush blowout in the electoral college (around 308 if I remember what I scribbled earlier on my whiteboard at work). On a completely unrelated note, the Melbourne cup just went off. My friend Nick is probably wondering why the ladies don't dress like this at Santa Anita. USC v. California, Part II & the Packer Question
Well, for those of you who continue to insist that California is not important on the national stage, let us turn our eyes awary from politics to what really matters: FOOTBALL!
Predictions are rolling in the newspapers and on the radio waves predicting that should USC and Cal win out, and Auburn and Oklahoma each lose one game, USC and Cal would collide again in the Orange Bowl in Florida for the national championship game. Can't you just hear the east coast loons choking on their own bias? Well, my guess is that it won't happen since the bias people will get Dan Rather to do a story on a memo that it was all a plot to... oh, what am I saying (smirk)?!?!?! Let's just go back to the old way of doing things and to heck with the BCS. Wisconsin-USC Rose Bowl anyone?
If this is truly the year to end silly "curses," then perhaps the resurrection of the Packers' post-season hopes also means that the "Redskins predictor" of presidential elections is also coming to an end. Shouldn't we just let Favre pick the president? Let's see an apparently conservative southerner and a hunter. Do you think he was fooled by the staged goose hunt?
I think the real questions are "whether or not the evangelicals will show up at the polls?", and "whether or not there is a Reagan effect?" (people not willing to say they are going to vote for Bush out of fear of reprisal but do so anyway - which is exactly what happened in the recent Howard re-election in Australia).
About two weeks ago I played with the electoral college calculator linked below for the first time and got this result: Bush 308 - Kerry 230. I have since manipulated it several times, but I will go with the advice of one of my former history teachers in high school and go with my first answer (which is what he suggested all students do when they were not sure of the answer). I've usually been right when following that strategy.

Electoral College Manipulation

And I really do not know what happens if there is a tie since the NEW senate is supposed to vote and the old VP who is the constitutional leader of the old senate who would normally vote a tie situation...????????

Dumbest Football Statement Ever!
Although I generally have enjoyed going to UCLA football games in section 19 off and on over the last few years because I like football (and a buddy used to coach there), one of the drawbacks has always been Michael Moore's younger brother (well, he looks like him and shares his politics) at the end of the row.
This IDIOT is barely cognizant of the rules and strategies of football. I remember one day a few years back when Oregon State was running the triple option offense, and he was trying to explain that it was the wishbone exclusively to his young son.
But he topped himself today: "How can it be pass interference when we intercepted the ball?"
There is a staunch UCLA family of four to the left of us who moved a few years back from in front of MM JR because they could not take his foul mouth and stupidity anymore. Even the dad spouted off today and bellowed that they had moved because of him.
He keeps yelling...
